Back-to-school season brings new routines, earlier mornings, after-school activities, and the return of packing lunches every day.To help you make one part of that busy routine a little easier, I created this guide.
A healthy school lunch doesn’t have to be complicated, a little planning and preparation can make it much easier to put together a colorful, nourishing lunch—even on those mornings when everyone is trying to get out the door at the same time.
Keep School Lunches Simple
Rather than trying to come up with a completely different lunch every day, I like to keep a variety of simple foods ready to mix and match.
The guide includes ideas for proteins, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and a little something sweet. You’ll also find examples of how these foods can be combined into simple lunchboxes, along with easy prep ideas to help make the school week run a little smoother.
One of my favorite tips is to get the kids involved. Let them choose a few fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, help wash and prep them, or pick what goes into their lunchbox. It can make packing lunches easier while helping children become more involved in the food they eat.

Choosing Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a colorful lunchbox. If you’re wondering which produce you may want to buy organic and where conventional can be a good option, I like using the Environmental Working Group’s annual Dirty Dozen™ and Clean Fifteen™ as a simple shopping reference.
